Crystal Waters made her breakthrough with her first smash hit “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless)”.
The unforgettable chorus of “La Da Di, La Di Da” and the social background of the lyrics, which deal with the life of a homeless woman, reached clubbers and radio stations alike. Subsequent crossover hits such as “100% Pure Love” and “In De Ghetto” have made Crystal a serious music act.
Crystal Waters was born into a family of musicians. But she first found her love in poetry, not music. No one suspected anything until her mother found her poetry book. At the age of 13, she presented some of her works and had them published by the American Poetry Society. Later, she began singing in a studio with a West African group in the background. She realized that she had found her passion with singing.
“I wrote ‘Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless)’ in my dining room. The bassline and the chorus melody ‘La Da Di, La Di Da’ was immediately in my head, but I missed the lyrics”
The lyrics came later, when she saw a woman standing in front of her sister’s office, day after day, well made-up, singing gospel songs and with a cup in her hand to collect money. Crystal thought badly of her at first and wondered why she didn’t just take a job and earn money.
But later she read in the newspaper about the woman that she had undeservedly lost her job and kept her pride alive with the make-up.
This led to the lyrics of the hit “Gypsy Woman”.
More radio and chart hits followed and today Crystal Woman is back on stage and provides the feeling of the 90s with her incomparable charm and great voice.
