Youssou N’Dour has been shaping the mbalax, the Senegalese pop style, in which traditional drum rhythms meet modern arrangements, since the seventies. He became known to an audience of millions in 1994 through “7 Seconds”, the duet with Neneh Cherry, which reached number one in several countries and sold over two million copies. Previously, he had already toured with Peter Gabriel, and in 2005 he won a Grammy for “Egypt”.
