The cult computer animation “The Annoying Thing” by Erik Wernquist formed the basis for this crazy phenomenon. With Daniel Malmedahl’s imitation of the sound of a moped two-stroke engine, a viral hit was created.
The Crazy Frog is a fascinating, anthropomorphic frog with an unmistakable style: he rocks an open white motorcycle helmet, a cool leather jacket, and chic windbreaker goggles. His eye-catching large eyes and webbed feet give him a unique look. It is rumored that he also has a discussed genital area, which has been censored since 2006.
The figure not only mimics riding a motorcycle, but also produces the typical sounds. When he “starts riding”, he glides effortlessly, leaving a trail of exhaust fumes behind him before disappearing into the distance at impressive speed.
The saga of the Crazy Frog began in 1997 when 17-year-old Swede Daniel Malmedahl began mimicking various engine sounds. His talent was quickly recognized and spread first through the internet and then in the media. Eventually, he even ended up on a television show where he showed off his skills.
The piece quickly spread to peer-to-peer networks under the name “2taktare” (Swedish for “two-strokes”) and was integrated into various Flash animations. One of the most famous animations was the “Insanity Test”, in which viewers were asked not to laugh while playing the piece on a Formula 1 car – otherwise they were considered crazy.
In 2003, Erik Wernquist decided to create the 3D animation “The Annoying Thing” and present it on his website, keeping the source of the ringtone anonymous. After Daniel Malmedahl found out about it, he contacted Wernquist, who then had to pay him compensation for the use of his piece. Soon after, external companies such as Jamba recognized the potential of the “annoying thing” for their marketing purposes and jumped on the bandwagon.
