In 1978, “Rat Trap” was the first song by an Irish band to reach number one in Great Britain, followed a year later by “I Don’t Like Mondays” and topped the charts for four weeks. The song has been a staple of rock radio ever since. In 1984, Geldof initiated Band Aid and organized Live Aid – the largest benefit concert of its time.
