1984 was his year – and what a year. Nik Kershaw spent fifty-two weeks in the UK charts, more than any other artist that year, with “Wouldn’t It Be Good”, “I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and “The Riddle”.
Elton John called him one of the best songwriters of his generation, and if you listen closely, you’ll understand why: these songs are musically much more sophisticated than the charts demanded at the time. He was on stage at Wembley at Live Aid in 1985, and later wrote the number one hit “The One and Only” for other artists.
He plays live with a band, as a guitarist and trained musician who carries his program himself – without playback, without security.
For eighties formats, open airs and festivals with an audience that sings along to every line.
