In 1983, his version of Marvin Gaye’s “Wherever I Lay My Hat” was at number one for three weeks. “Come Back and Stay” and “Love of the Common People” followed, and in 1985 “Everytime You Go Away” reached the top in the USA. He sang the first line of Band Aid, and he stood in front of the world audience at Wembley for Live Aid. His debut album sold millions of copies in Great Britain alone.
